According to foreign media reports, Chartered Semiconductor will manufacture 45-nanometer chips for video game consoles, which may be used for Microsoft's future Xbox 360.
Chartered Semiconductor CEO Chia Song Hwee told analysts on a conference call that the company is discussing plans to build 45-nanometer chips for its gaming consoles. But he did not disclose which customer, most likely Microsoft, because the Xbox 360 currently uses licensed semiconductor chips.
Chartered Semiconductor said that more advanced manufacturing technologies can reduce chip energy consumption, reduce heat generation and reduce manufacturing costs. Microsoft acknowledges that the chip is a key and expensive component of the Xbox 360 game console. Only by reducing the manufacturing cost of the chip can the game price of the game console be reduced, thereby reducing the loss of selling each Xbox 360 game console.
