Catalyst Releases High Efficiency Buck LED Driver

Catalyst Semiconductor, Inc., an advanced supplier of analog, mixed-signal devices and non-volatile memory, today announced an innovative step-down converter in the TSOT-23 package for driving high-brightness, output currents up to 350mA LED, conversion efficiency of up to 94%. The CAT4201 is the first product in the family of buck converters with a patent pending by Catalyst – a new switch control algorithm. This new architecture reduces system complexity and increases efficiency by allowing an external RSET control resistor to regulate LED currents up to 350mA at up to 24V supply, providing better control of the inductor and eliminating the need for a special thermal design.
In buck-type high-brightness LED driver applications, the CAT4201 step-down converter offers the advantages of a simpler and smaller footprint than a linear regulator, while eliminating heat sinks. In addition, the built-in overload protection safely handles instantaneous 40V voltages, making it ideal for automotive instrumentation and lighting, including turn signals, braking systems and map reading lighting.

Traditionally, linear regulators have been used to drive LED groups in 12V or 24V power supply systems, but this architecture generates a lot of heat, resulting in the need for dedicated heat sinks, so it is usually in a very large TO263 package. The CAT4201 uses a patent-pending new switch control algorithm that allows easy control of the average LED current with only one external resistor. This greatly reduces the internal power dissipation of the CAT4201, allowing it to be packaged in a 5-pin TSOT23 package without the need for a dedicated heat sink. In addition, the device's switching frequency is up to 1MHz, making it ideal for applications requiring small and inexpensive external inductors.

Customer application case: EZM Lighting Company

EZM Lighting, a leading manufacturer of safety lighting in the transportation sector, has adopted the CAT4201 device in its latest tunnel lighting products. Fabiano Paoletto, EZM Lighting Product Development Manager, said: "So far, we have been using linear regulators in mid-power lighting products. However, when our product line is extended to use the latest high-power LEDs, the conversion efficiency of the driver circuit and The heating problem has become very serious. The CAT4201 provides us with a simple and effective solution that allows our products to double the lighting power without the need for heat sinks."

The CAT4201 can drive a 1W LED when the supply voltage is 6V, and can drive up to 7 1W LEDs in series when the supply voltage is 24V. The specially designed enable control terminal can shut down the load and enter the “zero current” standby mode with minimal input current, which also prevents overdischarge of the battery in the battery-powered system. The CAT4201 also includes short circuit protection and over temperature protection.
