Overview:

The DS2438 smart battery monitor provides several valuable features for the battery pack: a unique serial number that can be used to identify the battery pack; a directly digitized temperature sensor eliminates the Thermistor in the battery pack; and measures battery voltage and current A/D converter; integrated current accumulator for recording the total amount of current entering and leaving the battery; an elapsed time recorder; and 40 bytes of non-volatile EEPROM memory for storing important battery parameters such as chemical type, battery Capacity, charging method and assembly date. The DS2438 uses the 1-Wire® interface to send and receive information, so only one connection (and ground) is required between the central microcontroller and the DS2438. This means that the battery pack requires only three output connectors: battery power, ground, and 1-Wire interface.

Since each DS2438 has a unique silicon serial number, multiple DS2438s can coexist on the same 1-Wire bus. This allows multiple battery packs to be charged simultaneously or used in the system.

This smart battery monitor can be used in portable computers, portable/cellular phones, and handheld instruments where close monitoring of battery real-time performance is required. In conjunction with the main system microcontroller, the DS2438 provides a complete smart battery solution that is chemically independent. When customizing a battery of a specific chemical type and capacity, simply enter the appropriate code into the microcontroller and the DS2438 EEPROM. When the chemistry type of the battery changes, the designer only needs to modify the software.
