National Semiconductor pushes high-brightness LED driver

National Semiconductor announced the addition of two new LED drivers to the company's PowerWise line of energy-efficient products. These two models, the LM3401 and LM3405A LED drivers, can drive high-brightness LEDs from 1W to 5W, making them ideal for industrial, automotive and general lighting systems such as solid state lights and advertising light boxes. Both chips have an extremely wide input voltage range and can output a constant current to control LED brightness. In addition, a lower feedback voltage helps reduce power consumption.

National's high-efficiency LM3401 LED driver is suitable for input voltages from 4.5V to 35V, and can output more than 3A of drive current, and the current can be flexibly adjusted with a duty cycle of up to 100%. In addition, the chip's feedback voltage is only 0.2V, and the current sensing accuracy is extremely high (no more than 3% error), so it can provide a constant current to the LED to ensure the color of the LED Light is stable.

The LM3405ALED driver is suitable for input voltages from 3V to 22V and can be regulated with a loosely coupled 12V AC voltage for industrial and commercial lighting applications. Because the chip is packaged in a compact SOT-23, the LED can be placed in a small light bulb, and the lighting efficiency is higher than traditional quartz and tungsten lamps, so it is a good choice to replace these two types of lights.

LM3401LED Driver Specifications

The LM3401 is a high efficiency hysteretic PFET switching controller that provides a constant drive current for the series LEDs. Excellent performance ensures stable color light output. The chip features an adjustable hysteresis window for flexibility in component selection and simplified system design. Another advantage of this chip is that no external compensation circuit is required. This chip can sense the regulated current of the LED, and then compare the LED current with the low feedback voltage of 0.2V. It can control the feedback constant current without adding an output capacitor. The LM3401 features programmable overcurrent and overvoltage protection and control of dimming with a PWM input signal via the DIM input pin. In terms of packaging, the chip is available in an 8-pin mini SOIC package.

LM3405ALED Driver Specifications

The latest National Semiconductor LM3405A chip is suitable for input voltages up to 22V, and its voltage range is higher than the previously marketed LM3405 chip. The LM3405A is a constant current buck regulator in a small 6-pin SOT-23 package that can deliver up to 1A of current and drive 3W or 5W LEDs. In addition, the LM3405A provides the 0.2V reference voltage required to perform constant current feedback control and provides internal compensation. The switching frequency operation is fixed at 1.6MHz, making it a simple and efficient LED driver solution. The LM3405A has an EN/DIM pin that supports PWM dimming control. The LM3405A can drive general lighting systems with 12V AC and 12V DC, including industrial and commercial lighting applications.
