Taiwan companies involved with LED lighting hope to improve the competitiveness of the industry with a new government-backed group. A group of seven LED lighting-related companies in Taiwan have received government backing to set up an alliance to carry out R&D into LED lighting standards And quality issues, according to an article on the Digitimes website.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the Department of Industrial Technology have teamed up with member companies Alliance Optotek, China Electric Manufacturing, Epistar, I-Chiun Precision Industry, Lite-On Technology, Lustrous Technology and Wei Min Industrial.
The group will aim to integrate technologies within the LED and lighting industries and develop the first complete LED lighting measurement standard in Taiwan, to improve the competitiveness of Taiwans LED lighting industry.
The alliance plans to develop LED T-bar indoor lamps with 100 lm/W light efficiency and 20,000-hour expected lifetime, LED headlights and LED street lamps, along with quality verification technologies.
In April, MOEA announced it will spend NT$2 billion (US$60.6 million) in the next four years to help develop the LED industry in Taiwan and expects the industry to reach a value of NT$540 billion by 2015.
In March this year, fourteen LED packagers and LED chip makers and the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) formed the Taiwan Optoelectronic Semiconductor Industry Association (TOSIA). See Taiwan LED makers form industry association for more details.
In February, Taiwan-based companies including AMA Precision, Depo, Epistar and Everlight formed an alliance to develop products for the LED automotive lamp after-market. Taiwans Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC) will lead the alliance and plans to develop three new LED-based headlights for the automotive market over the next year and a half.
