Texas Instruments 3 wafer fab aimed at analog IC

Texas Instruments (TI) has purchased fab production equipment in Texas, Japan, Aizuwakamatsu City, and Chengdu, China in the past two years to expand the production of analog ICs. Chen Jiancun, General Manager of Taiwan Region, explained to the outside world yesterday (16th). Including the 12-inch wafer fab (RFAB) in Richardson, Texas, and the 8-inch fab in Aizuwakamatsu and Chengdu. After the completion of the first phase of construction, it will pay close attention to revenue of approximately US$3 billion.

It is noteworthy that TI's expansion in addition to power management ICs also covers LDOs (linear regulators). Another Chengdu plant intends to use MOSFETs (power field-effect transistors) as the mainstay, and TI's lock-in applications include PCs, panels, Communications, digital cameras, etc., have not affected a single analog IC vendor, including analog IC manufacturers at home and abroad.

Chen Jiancun said that last year's RFAB is expected to complete equipment installation and mass production at the end of this year. Each year, analog IC shipments will exceed US$1 billion, and over 100 sets of tools will be purchased from Qimonda’s North American subsidiary and Germany’s Dresden. For the second phase of the plant expansion of the plant, when the northern Texas analog IC production will double, about 2 billion US dollars to bring in revenue.

Chen Jiancun further pointed out that in addition to the 12-factory plant, this year the acquisition of Sisson Semiconductor is located in two factories in Aizuwakamatsu, Japan. One of the 8-inch plant simulation products will contribute about US$1 billion in annual revenue, and the second plant can produce 8吋 or 12-inch wafers, currently retaining capacity to meet future expansion needs, and another before June 2012, TI will provide flash memory production and testing.

In October of this year, he said that the company will be the first TI manufacturing plant in China, and the main product will be MOSFET, which is expected to be mass-produced in the first quarter of next year. With a production area of 11,000 square meters, it is expected to provide more than US$1 billion in annual revenue, and another 12,000 square meter plant will be used for subsequent expansion. Chen Jiancun said that currently, the three plants all retain about 50% of their production capacity in the future.

Since this year, the domestic analog IC industry and the investment community have disagreed on the impact of Texas Instruments' expansion of the plant. Chen Jiancun emphasized that the cost of production equipment purchased by TI is relatively low and the products are more competitive. Moreover, there is a gap of approximately 1 percent between supply and demand. To increase flexibility in the use of production capacity, the company will still have the strength to use TI's financial status in the event of doubts in the economy.

The circuit of Membrane Switches can be flex and rigid. It depends on the customer end application and also related to the cost budget and other considerations. For example, life, resistance, connection type on main board etc.

For the Rigid circuit membrane switches, the circuit is rigid printed circuit board. The material of rigid PCB is usually FR4 and Copper. By this type of membrane switch, the connector usually is the SMD connector(sometimes also can be straight through connector). For some application which need very stiff capability, then use PCB circuit membrane switch.

For the flex circuit membrane switches, there are two types. They are silver printed PET circuit and copper etched FPC circuit.

Hotbar Lamination(Or Heatseal Lamination or Pluse Hot Pression) of FFC and FPC Tail to PET/ITO/PCB/FPC Circuit Layer: sometimes the customer need use the separate FPC or FFC tail connected to the membrane switch PET or PCB or FPC circuit layer, and for the Capacitive Membrane Switches also have such kind of application, then the hotbar lamination(or called pluse hot press lamination, or heatseal lamination) becomes necessary in these application fields. LUPHITOUCH is a professional manufacturer with such kind of lamination capability. We have such kind of assembly machine. We can hotseal the FFC/FPC tail to PET or FPC or PCB circuit of our manufactured membrane switches.
