Ultra-Basic: Pointer Multimeter Measurement Capacitor Method Sharing

In the process of appliance repair, faults caused by leakage or capacity changes of capacitors are common and faults are different. The general pointer multimeter and some digital multimeters cannot measure the capacitance, especially those small capacitors, which cause great inconvenience to the maintenance. Here, I will introduce you to several measurement methods for small-capacity capacitors for reference.

Method 1: Find a crystal triode with β ≥ 250 (requires a small penetration current). If it cannot be found at one time, it can be combined into two Darlington forms with the same type of triode, see Figure 1. Connect the measured capacitor to the ce junction of the triode (if there is a polar capacitor, the positive pole of the capacitor is connected to the c-pole of the triode), then use the multimeter R&TImes; 10k block, the black pen is connected to the c pole, and the red pen is connected to the e pole, see Figure 2 Observe the instantaneous swing of the hands. According to this method, several normal (high-precision) capacitors of known capacity are repeatedly tested, and the instantaneous maximum swing amplitude of each pin is recorded. The processing calculation is performed to calculate the capacitance value that should be represented for each cell on the dial. For future reference. When measuring the capacitance, the capacitance of the measured capacitor is compared with the reference amplitude to determine whether the capacitor is good or bad.

Method 2: Find a capacitor with a high accuracy of known capacity (withstand voltage above 250V) and a transformer with adjustable auto-transform output voltage, see Figure 3. Cn is the known capacitance, Cx is the capacitance to be tested, and the respective partial voltages of Cx and Cn are measured after the line is energized, but it should be noted that the output voltage after the power supply is not greater than the withstand voltage of Cx. At this time, the capacity of Cx can be calculated from the formula Uo/Ux=Co/Cx. If the withstand voltage of Cx is above 300V, you can directly connect two series capacitors to the AC power supply of 220V (Note: This method only adapts to non-polar capacitors). Method 3: If the capacitor withstand voltage is above 400V and only need to estimate the capacitance capacity, you can connect it according to Figure 4, let the measured capacitor be connected with a multimeter of the multimeter, and then dial the multimeter to the voltage block (250V) to measure the AC voltage. So, use a number of known capacitance tests, remember the amplitude of the hand swing, which can provide a basis for the future estimation of capacitance (Note: this method is limited to non-polar capacitance). Method 4: Measurement of electrolytic capacitors. Due to the polarity problem of the electrolytic capacitor, a half-wave rectifier diode can be connected as shown in Fig. 5, and the output voltage of the autotransformer is appropriately selected according to the withstand voltage of the capacitor to be tested. Co is an electrolytic capacitor of known capacity, and cx is the capacitance to be measured. After measuring according to the wiring, the Cx capacity can be calculated according to the formula Co/Cx=U0/Uv.
