The bridge, called the Kurilpa Bridge, is estimated to have about 36,500 people walking or cycling through the bridge every week. The Kurilpa Bridge spans the Brisbane River and connects Brisbane's Central Business District with the South Bank Art District. The Kurilpa Bridge looks like a knitting needle. It is not only one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, but it also features an advanced light-emitting diode (LED) lighting system. This solar-powered lighting system produces a variety of different lighting effects.
Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting systems are much more efficient than other lighting fixtures. The LED lighting system will be used for various festivals and lighting along river sections, for example, at the Riverfire Festival held annually at the Brisbane River. There are 84 solar cells on the bridge to provide power for the LED arrays. These solar cells generate 100 kWh of electricity per day (100 kWh) and an average annual output of 38 MWh (38,000 kWh). These energies are fully capable of providing the energy requirements of the bridge and most of the lighting needs.
It is reported that the Kurilpa Bridge is costing approximately US$63 million and was designed by Cox Architects of Australia. The Kurilpa pedestrian bridge claims to be the longest of its kind, with a span of 470 meters, a width of 6.5 meters and a bridge deck thickness of 25 centimeters. It is estimated that the Kurilpa Bridge will reduce CO2 emissions by 37.8 metric tons per year.
