ISUPPLI reviews the development of OLED, smart phone and LCD TV market

According to iSuppli, Samsung Electronics continued to maintain its leading position in the global LCD TV market in the second quarter, in part due to the surge in shipments of its LED-backlit TVs.

In the second quarter, Samsung's global LCD TV shipments reached 5.7 million units, an increase of 605,956 units from the 5.1 million units in the first quarter, making it the largest company in terms of shipments of all LCD TV brand manufacturers in the quarter. The 12% increase made Samsung Electronics' market share reach 18.5%.

"Samsung is very active in launching and selling LED-backlit LCD TVs in the second quarter," said Riddhi Patel, chief TV analyst at iSuppli. "This puts Samsung at the forefront of this fast-paced technology trend, helping it in the second Sales increased in the quarter."

Unlike traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions that produce their own light sources, LCD TVs require an additional illumination source or backlight to present a visible image. Liquid crystal displays have historically used fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) as backlights. However, LEDs have been a replacement for CCFLs in recent years due to lower prices.

OLED shipments for mobile home screens will grow sevenfold by 2015

According to market research firm iSuppli, manufacturers have introduced mobile phones using active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) main screen, which is expected to drive the display | display device market to explode in the next few years.

From 2009 to 2015, shipments of OLED displays, which serve as the main screen for mobile phones, are expected to grow sevenfold. In 2015, global OLED handset main screen shipments will increase from 22.2 million in 2009 to 178 million.

2014 smartphones will exceed PND in the navigation market

According to iSuppli, as GPS smartphones will become increasingly popular in the next few years, the days of portable navigation devices (PNDs) in the global navigation market are coming to an end.

After years of strong sales growth, PND will continue to lead the navigation market in 2009, with 114 million units in use by the end of the year, compared with 57.8 million smartphones. However, by 2014, the use of navigation-enabled smartphones will rise to 305 million units, which is expected to reach approximately 128 million PNDs at that time.
