The original name "Taranis" comes from Celtic mythology, where it refers to the god of thunder. In modern times, it has become the codename for the latest unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) developed by the British Ministry of Defence. The Taranis, also known as the Raytheon UAV, is a high-tech delta-wing fighter designed for stealth and autonomous operations. In 2010, a technology demonstrator was launched, featuring advanced stealth capabilities and self-defense systems, allowing it to perform long-range intercontinental missions.
Structural Features
The aircraft is designed with a blended wing-body configuration, featuring a large swept-forward leading edge. The trailing edges of both the fuselage and wings are parallel to the leading edge, which enhances aerodynamic efficiency and increases endurance. This design allows for extended flight times, supporting long-range strike capabilities. The overall dimensions of the Taranis are similar to BAE Systems' Eagle Advanced Trainer, with a wingspan exceeding 9 meters, a length of approximately 11 meters, and a takeoff weight of over 8,000 kilograms. Its compact yet powerful design makes it ideal for future combat scenarios.
Development Process
In early 2006, BAE Systems first revealed some details about the UAV technology demonstrator. On December 7, 2006, the UK Ministry of Defence officially awarded a £124 million contract to the team led by BAE Systems after a comprehensive evaluation of the full-scale demonstrator's design and functionality.
On November 20, 2007, BAE Systems held a ceremony at its factory in Lancashire to mark the start of body machining, signaling the official transition into the manufacturing phase of the Taranis demonstrator. Following this, the company began producing the engine inlet ducts using advanced fiber-laying techniques at its specialized composite manufacturing facilities. The aircraft was finally unveiled to the public on July 12, 2010, marking a major milestone in the UK’s unmanned aerial systems program.
