Connected Era: PTC Accelerates Personalization of IoT for Automotive and Intelligent Manufacturing

In the early days of the Internet Age, industry experts predicted that the next big wave in internet development would be the personalization of the Internet of Things (IoT). The emerging IoT market is expected to touch and simplify every aspect of daily life, offering vast opportunities for innovation. By 2022, the global connected car market was projected to grow at a rate of nearly 25% annually. In the years ahead, both the automotive and industrial sectors are set to become key components of the IoT ecosystem. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Kerry Grimes, President of PTC China, a leading provider of IoT and augmented reality solutions. During our conversation, we explored PTC’s role in shaping the future of the Internet of Things. ![Mr. Kerry Grimes, President of PTC China](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/F8/7E/AC/B5FE4A8DC8m.jpg) PTC has emerged as a pioneer in IoT technology, driving transformation across industries. According to Mr. Grimes, the Internet of Things is reshaping how companies operate, innovate, and deliver value. The adoption of IoT platforms is now a top priority for many businesses seeking to build smart, connected solutions. Originally known for its CAD and PLM products, PTC began integrating IoT capabilities into its offerings as early as 1998. Today, hundreds of IoT partners rely on PTC’s ThingWorx® platform to accelerate their projects. These companies benefit from pre-integrated tools, extensions, and application support, which streamline customer experiences, reduce time-to-market, and expand reach. Looking ahead, IoT and China are central to PTC’s growth strategy. Mr. Grimes shared that PTC’s global business is performing strongly, with all segments showing growth. While traditional businesses grow at a single-digit rate, the IoT division has consistently seen double-digit growth over the past few years. Analysts are optimistic about PTC’s long-term potential. Although PTC’s IoT business is still in its early stages, it already brings new value to its traditional products. The company aims to seamlessly integrate IoT into its core offerings while expanding its partner ecosystem. As the new president of PTC China, Mr. Grimes is focused on bringing PTC’s U.S.-based R&D and partner networks to the Chinese market, fostering closer collaboration with local partners. In the field of smart manufacturing, PTC’s IoT solutions are transforming production processes. From embedded sensors to connected workflows, IoT enables more efficient, manageable, and serviceable products. PTC’s ThingWorx® platform offers fast application development, connectivity, analytics, machine learning, and augmented reality capabilities, forming a robust IoT technology stack that empowers companies to connect assets, build applications, and unlock new value. On the automotive front, PTC uses IoT to personalize in-car displays. For instance, drivers can choose where to place the fuel gauge—on the left or right side of the screen. Augmented Reality technology also allows for custom panel designs, opening up endless possibilities for user experience enhancements.
