In the early days of the Internet Age, industry experts highlighted that the next major evolution in the digital landscape would be the personalization of the Internet of Things (IoT). The emerging IoT market is expected to touch and simplify every aspect of daily life, offering vast potential for innovation. By 2022, the global connected car market was projected to grow at a rate of nearly 25% annually. Looking ahead, both the automotive and industrial sectors are set to become key components of the IoT ecosystem.
Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Kerry Grimes, President of PTC China, a leading provider of IoT and augmented reality solutions. During our conversation, he shared insights on PTC’s role in shaping the future of the Internet of Things.

As an innovator in IoT technology, PTC has played a significant role in transforming how companies operate and deliver services. According to Mr. Grimes, the Internet of Things is driving a fundamental shift in business models and product development. Utilizing IoT platforms has become a top choice for developing smart solutions. While PTC originally focused on CAD and PLM products, it began integrating IoT capabilities as early as 1998. Today, hundreds of IoT partners use PTC’s ThingWorx® platform to accelerate their IoT initiatives. These companies benefit from pre-integrated solutions, extensions, and tools that streamline customer experiences, reduce time-to-market, and expand their reach.
Looking ahead, the Internet of Things and China have become central to PTC’s strategic vision. Mr. Grimes noted that PTC's global operations are performing well, with all business segments showing growth. While traditional businesses grow at a single-digit rate, the IoT division has consistently expanded at a double-digit pace. Analysts in the U.S. remain optimistic about PTC’s stock performance.
Although PTC is still in the early stages of its IoT product development, the revenue generated from these solutions is already making a meaningful impact. More importantly, IoT has revitalized PTC’s traditional offerings, enabling seamless integration between legacy systems and modern technologies. This synergy allows PTC to continue expanding its IoT partner ecosystem and delivering more value to customers.
As the new president of PTC China, Mr. Grimes is focused on bringing PTC’s strong R&D and partner ecosystems from the U.S. to the Chinese market, fostering closer collaboration with local partners.
In the realm of smart manufacturing, PTC’s IoT approach has transformed the way products are designed, produced, and managed. From the production line to embedded sensors, IoT enables greater efficiency, control, and serviceability. PTC’s ThingWorx® platform offers fast application support, connectivity, analytics, machine learning, augmented reality, and cloud integration. Together, these features form a comprehensive IoT technology stack that helps companies securely connect assets, develop applications quickly, and unlock new value.
On the automotive front, PTC leverages IoT to personalize vehicle interfaces. For example, drivers can choose where to display the fuel gauge—on the left or right side of the screen. Additionally, PTC’s augmented reality technology allows for customizations on the dashboard, offering a wide range of possibilities to enhance user experience.
