Sumitomo Electric joins hands with Sony to develop the world's first green semiconductor laser diode

Recently, Sumitomo Electric and Sony jointly developed the world's first true green semiconductor laser diode, which has an optical output power of more than 100 mW, a wavelength of 530 nm, and twice the brightness of conventional "gallium nitride green laser diodes". .

This laser diode can be mounted on a laser projector and many other display devices. The new laser diodes have twice the luminosity of conventional GaN green laser diodes (60 mW or less, 520 nm or less) and an 182% gamut standard. Therefore, these can make laser projections achieve better video and image performance.

Red and blue laser diodes have long been commercially available, and high-output green laser diodes have been in the research and development stage. Conventional GaN-based green lasers do not achieve sufficient brightness and wavelength, and can only achieve tens of milliwatts of output power at 520 nm or less.

To overcome these challenges, Sumitomo Electric worked with Sony to develop a true green semiconductor laser, drawing on Sumitomo's semi-polar gallium nitride technology, crystal growth, and chip processing technology, as well as Sony's GaN-based blue laser technology. By adopting new technologies and improving the production process of the entire semiconductor laser, including structural design, crystal growth, chip processing, and electrode configuration, Sumitomo Electric and Sony were able to successfully develop true green semiconductor lasers (light output power exceeded The wavelength of 100 mW is at 530 nm).

The development of green semiconductor laser diodes has improved the trichromatic laser source, and Sumitomo Electric and Sony are expected to apply this technology to laser projectors. At the same time, Sumitomo Electric and Sony will continue to develop to achieve higher power, higher efficiency, higher quality green semiconductor laser diodes.
