Chip maker Toshiba has just launched a new VisconTI image recognition chip. The latest VisconTI 3 processor uses two Cortex A9 cores, for a total of 6 floating-point arithmetic units. Toshiba initially launched the VisconTI image recognition processor in 2004, and later upgraded its processor products in 2011. This time the product replacement cycle is much shorter.
Toshiba said that this VisconTI 3 chip contains 64GB of shielded heap read memory Mask ROM, 2MB SRAM, and supports DDR2 533Mhz memory. In addition, the chip supports a single-channel PCI Express interface, and the chip is packaged in BGA. According to Toshiba, Visconti chips are mainly positioned in the automotive industry, not the consumer electronics market. The main functions of the chip include the detection of traffic lanes, vehicles and traffic signs, and the detection of pedestrians through facial and motion recognition.
Toshiba said that the European New Car Evaluation Test (NCAP) will require automakers to introduce automatic braking systems in 2014. Toshiba believes that its own chip products will become an important part of this system. In April this year, Visconti 3 chips will produce a small part, and mass production is expected to begin in January 2014. Toshiba has high hopes for this chip, expecting to sell 100,000 models in the first year and reach 2 million in fiscal 2015.
