In 2013, Huawei, which was leading the domestic mobile phone market, launched its own sub-brand, Honor, and started operating under the HUAWEI and Honor brand strategies in the mobile phone segment. Over the years, we've gained a clearer understanding of Huawei's business logic. The P series and Mate series are the flagship models targeting the high-end market, with prices starting from 4000 RMB and above. On the other hand, the Honor brand focuses on the mid-to-low-end market, offering younger designs and better value-for-money products. To better position the Honor series, Huawei even removed the HUAWEI logo from the Honor models and rebranded them with a new identity.

The Honor 9 and V9 were released in June and February 2017, respectively. As devices from the same product cycle, both feature Huawei's Kirin 960 octa-core CPU with Mali G71 GPU. They also offer optional configurations of 4GB or 8GB RAM paired with 64GB or 128GB ROM.

What you see above is what most people would look at, but there's no real sense of the specs section. Now, let's talk about how we actually used and felt these two phones.

Screen:

Take out your favorite Coke, here's a comparison of the sizes between the Honor 9 and V9:

The Honor 9 features a 5.15-inch 1080p screen, while the V9 has a 2K resolution display. In my personal experience, without direct comparison, the V9 clearly shows a more vivid and clear screen. Even though most smartphones now use full-screen designs, the V9’s high resolution gives it a sharper and more immersive visual experience.

Material:

The Honor 9 uses the official "3D curved aurora glass" mirror design, which refracts ambient light in different directions, giving the phone a smart and lively appearance. However, this beauty comes at a cost—fingerprint smudges are more noticeable, and the coating on the back may wear off faster. Still, the official promotional images are quite appealing.

The V9, on the other hand, uses a more traditional matte aluminum body. While it doesn’t shine as brightly as the Honor 9, it feels more practical and durable.

Camera:

Both models come with dual-lens cameras. The Honor 9 upgraded from two 12-megapixel lenses to one 12MP and one 20MP lens, with an f/2.2 aperture. The V9, however, still uses two 12MP lenses. Based on the hardware specs, the V9 should perform better in photography. In reality, the V9 showed an advantage in wide-angle shooting, proving that specs don’t always tell the whole story.

Dual-lens technology is mainly used for background blur and night scene photography, so these two aspects will be highlighted in our tests. I compared the two with an iPhone 7 Plus, and the results were surprisingly similar. The camera experience is getting closer to the "foolproof" feel of Apple.

Night Photography:

Curious about the night mode, I tested both models and found that they combine multiple exposures to create the best possible night image. Personally, I think the V9 offers better clarity and detail.

Performance:

My sister didn't provide the original charger, so I couldn't fully test the charging speed. I used a 2V 1A power adapter instead, just to give you a rough idea. The data might vary due to environmental differences. The Honor 9 takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes to charge from 0% to 100%, while the V9 takes around 2 hours and 50 minutes.

Fingerprint Sensor:

Both phones have fingerprint sensors. The Honor 9 places it on the front, while the V9 puts it on the back. In terms of recognition speed, using an iPhone 6s, the experience felt relatively slow, similar to the iPhone 6 level. However, Huawei has developed more functions around the fingerprint sensor. For example, the V9 allows the back fingerprint to act as a camera button or to slide out the menu bar. With such developments, the strength of domestic brands is truly impressive.

Conclusion:

After using both phones for a while, the biggest feeling I had was that they seemed like a pair of brothers. The V9, as the elder brother, offers a more mature and stable experience. The Honor 9, like the younger brother, brings a bit of rebelliousness and uniqueness. Together, they cater to different consumer preferences. By the way, did you notice that the V9's function description at the end was cut off? Any thoughts on that?
