Have you ever thought about upgrading your car? Maybe it's getting a bit old, or your family has grown, and the current vehicle just doesn't have enough space. When shopping for a new car, you might focus on things like color, seating capacity, or fuel efficiency—but there’s one important question that often gets overlooked: Does it actually fit in your parking space?
If you live in a big city, especially in a place with high property values, or if you have a small garage at home, parking can become a real hassle. Imagine trying to squeeze into a tight spot every day—it could turn into a daily annoyance that affects your quality of life.
Recently, Edmunds, a popular automotive platform, introduced a new AR feature designed to help solve this very issue. This tool uses augmented reality to give buyers a better idea of whether a new car will fit in their space before they even make a purchase.
The feature is built using Apple’s ARKit, combining depth sensing, area learning, and motion tracking to scan your environment and create a 3D model. It then checks if the vehicle you're considering would fit perfectly in your garage or driveway.
"Mobile AR is advancing quickly, and it's making car shopping more convenient than ever," said Brock Stearn, technical director of immersive experiences at Edmunds. "With powerful tools and industry-leading AR features, Edmunds helps users make smarter decisions when buying a car."
For areas without walls—like open driveways or street parking—users can create virtual boundaries to test how well a car fits. This feature supports nearly all vehicle models listed in the U.S. since 1990, making it a versatile tool for many drivers.
Currently, the AR function is available on iPhone 6s and newer models. To use it, simply tap the "Can It Fit?" button on the Edmunds app. Whether you're looking for a compact car or a larger SUV, this feature can save you from the frustration of finding out too late that your new ride won’t fit in your space.
