The 2018 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018) marked a clear shift in the consumer tech landscape, proving that the Internet of Things (IoT) is no longer just a concept—it's here and evolving rapidly. At CES Unveiled, one of the main events of the show, it became evident that IoT has transitioned from an emerging trend to a fundamental part of everyday life.
For manufacturers, the three pillars of any IoT device remain connectivity, big data, and applications. This year, many IoT devices are now being designed with direct 4G support, which means they can operate independently without relying on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. While these traditional wireless options are still available, some vendors are choosing to skip them entirely, signaling a move toward more versatile and standalone smart devices.
One standout innovation was the introduction of blockchain technology at CES 2018. A Chinese company, Triangle Technology (HK), showcased a unique Windows PC called Acute Angle, which functions as both a regular computer and a blockchain node. During idle time, it acts as a decentralized mining machine, though the company emphasized it’s not aimed at individual consumers but rather for enterprise use.
In the virtual reality (VR) space, developers continue to refine user experiences. While VR headsets still have a somewhat awkward look, companies are working to make them more comfortable and immersive. Some manufacturers introduced new accessories, such as foot pedals, to enhance physical interaction and provide a more realistic sense of movement within virtual environments.
Another notable product was the 3DRudder, a VR controller shaped like a foot pedal, allowing users to navigate virtual spaces more naturally. Meanwhile, DisplayLink Corporation presented wireless VR devices that give users greater freedom of movement, reducing the need for cumbersome cables.
Beyond hardware, there was a strong focus on sensing technologies. Almost every product on display had built-in sensors, and these weren’t just basic components—they were advanced, multi-functional, and increasingly integrated into daily life. From visual and auditory sensors to tactile ones, the industry is pushing the boundaries of how devices can interact with users.
Dror Sharon, CEO of Consumer Physics, highlighted this trend by sharing his vision: “I dream of having billions of sensors in the consumer device arena.†His company’s SCiO handheld near-infrared spectrometer was on display, capable of analyzing the sugar content in fruits and other materials, showcasing how powerful and accessible sensor technology has become.
With all these advancements, it's clear that 2018 was a turning point—where IoT, blockchain, VR, and smart sensors converged to shape the future of consumer electronics.
