The CES Unveiled event, a major press conference held during the 2018 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018), clearly demonstrates that the Internet of Things (IoT) is no longer a distant vision—it has already become a reality and is rapidly evolving. This marks a significant milestone in the development of connected technologies, with IoT devices now deeply embedded in everyday life.
For every supplier, the three core components of any IoT device are connectivity, big data, and applications. This year, many IoT devices have started to support 4G cellular networks directly, signaling a shift from traditional Wi-Fi or Bluetooth low energy. While these older options are still available, manufacturers are increasingly confident in moving away from them, focusing instead on more reliable and widespread connectivity solutions.
A startup named Funky Sound Studio introduced 4G-enabled wireless headsets at the event, showcasing how IoT technology is becoming more accessible and integrated into daily use.
Another notable trend at this year’s CES Unveiled was the introduction of blockchain-based devices. One Chinese company, Triangle Technology (HK), presented a unique Windows PC called Acute Angle, designed to function as a blockchain node. During idle times, it can act as a decentralized mining machine. However, the company emphasized that this device is not aimed at consumers but rather for large-scale enterprise applications.
Chinese manufacturers made a strong showing in the blockchain space, highlighting the growing interest in secure, decentralized technologies.
Virtual reality (VR) also remained a key focus at CES 2018. Although current VR headsets often make users look awkward—like “headless fliesâ€â€”some companies are working to improve the user experience. For instance, several manufacturers introduced VR controllers that go beyond visual immersion, such as foot pedals that allow users to move naturally within virtual environments, enhancing the sense of physical presence.

DisplayLink Corporation demonstrated wireless VR devices that give users greater freedom of movement, further pushing the boundaries of what's possible in immersive technology.
In addition, almost all consumer electronics showcased at CES Unveiled shared one common feature: the integration of advanced sensing technology. These sensors are not only more numerous and powerful but also more ubiquitous than ever before. Companies are continuously exploring new ways to capture data through sight, sound, touch—and even taste and smell. Startups and developers are eager to leverage these innovations to offer more personalized and interactive experiences to end-users.
