According to a report by CCTV’s "Economy, Half an Hour," the Light Power Laboratory at the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences showcased a turbofan engine whose fuel efficiency and service life have reached international standards. This was a major breakthrough domestically, as all components were independently designed and manufactured.
One of the biggest challenges in engine manufacturing is the high-temperature single-crystal turbine blade. China's 1,000-kilogram engine operates at a high-pressure speed of nearly 40,000 revolutions per minute, with a tangential speed of about 450 meters per second and temperatures exceeding 1,720 degrees Celsius. Such extreme conditions require materials that can withstand intense heat and stress.
Producing these high-quality single-crystal blades requires rare metals like rhenium. Rhenium is the latest naturally occurring element discovered by humans, and it is even rarer than diamonds. It is found in very small quantities in the Earth's crust, with approximately 80% used in the production of aero engines.
According to data from the US Geological Survey, global proven reserves of rhenium are estimated at around 2,500 tons. Its price is comparable to platinum, with 1 gram valued at between $200 and $300.
In 2010, Chengdu Hangyu Superalloy Technology Co., Ltd. discovered rhenium in the Huanglongpu molybdenum mine district in Luonan County, Shaanxi Province. The reserve amounted to 176 tons, accounting for roughly 7% of the world's total. This discovery placed China among the top holders of rhenium reserves, following Chile, the United States, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
The company spent over a year perfecting the purification process of rhenium. With government support, they gathered top experts from around the world and established a factory in Shuangliu, Chengdu, in late 2013. By July 2015, the first batch of products passed quality tests, marking a major breakthrough.
In 2016, a third-party testing agency confirmed that the single-crystal blades produced by Chengdu Hangyu met European and American standards in terms of high-temperature tensile strength and durability. As a result, the company became the first in China to achieve a first-class production rate for single-crystal blades, signaling a major leap forward in China’s aerospace industry.
