With the rapid development of industry, China's environment is facing increasingly severe challenges. In 2014, among the 161 prefecture-level cities and above that were monitoring new air quality standards, 145 cities had air quality exceeding the standard, accounting for 90.1%. In Beijing, the compliance rate for the total number of days last year was only 47.1%, meaning that in 2014, only 172 days out of 365 allowed people to see blue skies and white clouds. These figures have made smog a top environmental concern for the public.


Currently, inhalable particulate matter (PM2.5), which refers to particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter, has become a key focus in environmental monitoring. PM2.5 is a complex mixture containing numerous organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorines, polychlorinated biphenyls, and plasticizers. Among these, organochlorines and polychlorinated biphenyls are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and they are prioritized for control due to their long-lasting impact on the environment.

Using Thermo Fisher’s Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ ASETM 350 Accelerated Solvent Extractor, samples of PM2.5 can be efficiently prepared, concentrated, and processed. This is then followed by analysis using the Thermo Scientific™ ISQ™ LT Single Quadrupole GC/MS system. The sample preparation process takes only 20 minutes, with minimal solvent use, easy operation, and high recovery rates. Additionally, the ISQ single quadrupole mass spectrometer provides ultra-high sensitivity and detection limits, making it ideal for analyzing ultra-trace levels of organochlorines and polychlorinated biphenyls in airborne particulates.
