Giants seize the MicroLED market OLED screen facing overproduction and price cuts

The iPhone X was equipped with an OLED screen, but it couldn't effectively manage the heat generated by the technology. As a result, the next big thing in display tech might be MicroLED. OLED screens were once seen as the future of smartphones, and Apple introduced them in the iPhone X last year. However, this didn't trigger a widespread adoption by other manufacturers. In fact, Apple, Samsung, and Foxconn are already investing heavily in MicroLED, suggesting that OLED may soon be replaced. According to Bloomberg, OLED screens offer flexibility and energy efficiency compared to LCDs. However, they come with high costs, and the sales of the iPhone X haven’t met expectations. Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo have not fully embraced OLED, leading to overproduction and price cuts in the market. Additionally, OLED screens are prone to color inconsistencies and burn-in issues. Raymond Soneira, CEO of DisplayMate, noted, “OLEDs can survive because major players like Samsung, Apple, and LG keep investing. I've been focused on OLED for years, and their performance is still top-notch.” [Image: Giants seize the MicroLED market – OLED screen faces overproduction and price cuts] Sources close to the matter say that Samsung remains optimistic about OLED and hasn’t felt much pressure to reduce prices. The company is betting on its Galaxy S9 and future foldable devices to drive demand. Apple also plans to release a larger version of the iPhone X later this year. However, OLED has long been threatened by the rising potential of MicroLED. This emerging technology offers even better performance with fewer drawbacks. Apple started a research lab in Taiwan in 2015 to explore MicroLED, and its main supplier, Foxconn, has partnered with eLux, a MicroLED startup. In 2014, Apple acquired LuxVue, a MicroLED manufacturer. Although MicroLED has already made appearances in high-end TVs like those from Samsung, Soneira says that it's not yet ready for smartphones or smartwatches. It could take at least three to five years before it surpasses OLED in performance. The iPhone X didn’t spark a rush among manufacturers to adopt OLED screens, leading to a crisis of overproduction and falling prices. With the rise of MicroLED, the future of OLED remains uncertain, and the industry is watching closely to see which technology will ultimately win the battle for the next generation of displays.
