LEDs, known as fourth-generation light sources, have experienced explosive growth in recent years, driven by industrial capital and government subsidies. However, the safety of LEDs has caused some people in the medical community to be uneasy. Some experts worry that "LED blue light will cause damage to the retina."

Yu Anqi, deputy director of Shanghai Lighting Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Station and chairman of the Shanghai Lighting Society, said that blue light is a constant light in nature and an important part of sunlight. It must also exist in various white light sources. The environment has "blue light" everywhere, so it is unreasonable to equate "blue light" with "retina damage."

However, many LED luminaires on the market today are tuned to white light by emitting blue-emitting phosphors from the chip, which makes the blue-light spectrum of white LED lighting products richer than other light sources. "It is precisely because of the rich characteristics of the blue light spectrum of white LED lighting products that the international standard of photobiohazard is available to remind the product of the safety."

How is LED safe?

Is the LED product on the market safe? What is Blu-ray overflow? How should a special population be used healthily? Reporters were investigated.

The Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision recently organized a testing organization to conduct risk monitoring on some commercially available LED lighting products. It was found that among the 27 LED lamp samples, one sample was in moderate danger under abnormal use conditions, that is, the eyes were close to the distance. Harm to the retina when looking at the light source.

According to reports, the 27 LED sample types tested included table lamps, spotlights, downlights, panel lights and light bulbs. Under normal use, 14 categories are non-hazardous, and 13 are classified as low-risk, all of which are safe. However, if it is used under abnormal conditions, that is, the front light-transmitting diffuser is removed, there is one type that has reached a medium risk. The current national standard limits are based on experimental data from adults and 8-hour exposures. The long-term effects of light on the human body have not been considered and certain special populations, such as infants and young children, may be looking directly at the light source for a long time, thus causing Retinal damage.

LED supervision urgently needs to implement mandatory national standard

A number of experts suggested that the current "Photobiosafety of Lights and Lamps" standard should be adjusted from a recommended standard to a mandatory standard, and risk monitoring should be carried out nationwide. In addition, the color temperature applicable to LED lighting products in different locations should also be specified.

Zhang Hailu, honorary chairman of the Shanghai Lighting Society, pointed out that the color temperature of indoor LED lighting products should not exceed 4000K, and LED lighting products with color temperature of 5000K and above should be avoided. At present, the Shanghai Product Quality and Safety Assessment Research Center has also launched related risk monitoring projects.
