Fire protection standards differ significantly across regions, and in North America, the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) standards are categorized into different levels based on their fire resistance. These ratings range from the highest to the lowest as follows:

  • Flame Retardant CMP – Designed for use in ventilation ducts or air return plenums, this is the most stringent rating.
  • Non-combustion Trunk Line CMR – Suitable for vertical trunk lines and horizontal areas.
  • Non-combustion Commercial Grade CM – Typically used in horizontal applications within commercial settings.
  • Non-combustion General Purpose CMG – For general horizontal installations.
  • General Home Grade CMX – Must be installed horizontally and is suitable for residential environments.

CommScope SYSTIMAX's 20×× series cables are classified as CMP, meeting the highest fire safety standards. Meanwhile, the 10×× series cables are rated CMR, offering reliable fire performance for vertical and horizontal runs.

In Europe, low-smoke, halogen-free cables follow three main standards:

  • IEC 60332-3 or IEC 60332-1 – Focuses on flame propagation and flame retardancy.
  • IEC 61034 – Evaluates smoke density during combustion.
  • IEC 754 – Assesses the corrosiveness and toxicity of gases produced when burning.

The IEC 60332-1 standard applies only to single wires and involves a vertical burning test with lower fire resistance. Even after the flame is removed, it may still smolder, and the carbon monoxide emissions can be high. In contrast, IEC 60332-3 tests multiple wires in a bundle, providing a much higher level of fire resistance. This standard also includes features that help contain flames, reducing the risk of chain reactions caused by fires.

IEC 60332-3 is further divided into three classes: A, B, and C. Class A requires more extensive testing, with a burn time of 40 minutes, while Class C has a shorter burn time of 20 minutes. As a result, cables compliant with IEC 60332-3A offer stricter fire performance than those meeting IEC 60332-3C.

CommScope SYSTIMAX's 30×× series cables are low-smoke, halogen-free cables that meet the highest IEC 60332-3A standard, making them ideal for critical applications where fire safety is a top priority.

When comparing international standards, the following equivalences can be noted:

  • IEC 60332-1 is equivalent to the North American UL CM rating.
  • IEC 60332-3 corresponds to the UL CMR rating.

For important infrastructure projects where personal safety is a concern, we strongly recommend using either UL-rated CMP cables or IEC 60332-3A low-smoke, halogen-free cables. These options provide the best fire protection and minimize risks in case of emergencies.
