LED indoor positioning service provider ByteLight receives $3 million in Series A financing

ByteLight, an LED indoor positioning service provider, recently received a $3 million Series A round of financing, including Flywheel Ventures and Motorola Solutions Venture Capital.

Unlike other service providers that use WiFi signals for indoor positioning, ByteLight chose LED indoor positioning. LED luminaires with ByteLight chips embedded will emit a flashing signal (which is not perceptible to the naked eye). When the consumer opens an application that supports ByteLight, the camera will detect these signals to identify the user's current location.

ByteLight technology has to transform LED luminaires on the production line. Each new luminaire costs 10 cents more than ordinary luminaires. The technical advantage of this technology is that the positioning accuracy will be within 1 meter, and no additional structure is required for the retail store. In business mode ByteLight is a form of technology licensing. Instead of producing chips or producing lamps, it provides hardware technology licenses and supporting mobile application technologies to vendors (and developers).

At present, the customers of ByteLight indoor positioning service are mainly retailers. In addition to being used for indoor navigation, it is more important that retailers can market based on the specific location of the consumer in the store and ultimately influence consumer decisions.

Startups and big companies have recently moved in the field of indoor positioning. There are three acquisitions in this area this year. Apple acquired Wifi indoor positioning technology company WifiSLAM for $20 million, network access service provider Ruckus Wirelss acquired YFind, and enterprise Wifi service provider Aruba acquired Meridian for indoor positioning navigation application.

Domestically, Wisdom Map provides both indoor positioning and navigation solutions based on WiFi fingerprint recognition, and this year also launched its own C-side indoor map navigation application. UF Technology is doing to B service, providing network-side WiFi indoor positioning solution. Map data layer section, point road and map source Palmap are doing indoor map data service providers.
