The Polish electric vehicle battery plant, located in Wrocław in the southwestern part of the country, spans 41,000 square meters. It is the fourth-largest manufacturing facility built by Lekin Chemical and holds a dominant 90% share in the high-performance electric car battery market. This project marked a major milestone for Lejin Chemical, helping it establish itself as a leading player in the industry. The plant was officially launched in the second half of 2017, signaling a strong commitment to the growing EV market.
In parallel, South Korean tech giant LG announced plans to build the largest lithium-ion battery plant for electric vehicles in Wroclaw. LG Chemical, a division of LG, was expected to begin operations in 2019, with the goal of supplying batteries for 100,000 electric vehicles annually starting from the following year. This move underscored LG’s strategic push into the European EV market.
Despite being a significant investment, LG’s production scale still lags behind its competitors. For instance, Panasonic’s latest Chinese battery factory can supply enough batteries for around 200,000 electric vehicles each year. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada is set to produce more batteries than any other facility globally, with an annual capacity estimated at 500,000 units. According to Musk, the Gigafactory has already become the world’s most productive battery plant, surpassing all others in terms of output.
As automakers increasingly shift their focus toward electric and hybrid vehicles, battery production is becoming a critical factor in the success of this transition. While new battery factories are helping to ease the bottleneck, the supply of raw materials for batteries—such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel—may soon become a bigger challenge. Ensuring a stable and sustainable supply chain will be essential for the long-term growth of the electric vehicle industry.
