Thin film variable wing drone into "Batman"

British researchers mimicked bat wings and designed a new film variable wing. Micro- UAVs made with this wing can fly farther, save more fuel, and be easier to maintain.

Researchers at the University of Southampton and Imperial College of England used electroactive polymers to make wings and used computer models to calculate the best wing structure. Simply applying a voltage, the film wing can contract and stretch like a bat wing in flight. This new wing has no mechanical parts, more like artificial muscles, and can change shape depending on the force it is subjected to. The researchers installed the film wing on a drone, and the drone achieved good results in a short sea gliding flight test.

Rafael Palacios of Imperial College, who participated in the study, said that bat wings can be stretched freely to help them better adapt to different environments. While micro-UAVs mimic this capability, they can perform multiple tasks and increase deployment flexibility.
