According to the Asahi Shimbun website, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) recently revealed details about the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, which is set to take place this fall. In recent years, public interest in cars in Japan has gradually declined, and regional auto shows have started to draw more attention. To regain popularity, JAMA plans to leverage virtual reality (VR) technology and introduce a variety of new interactive experiences at this year’s event.
The Tokyo Motor Show will be held from October 27th to November 5th at the TOKYO BIG SIGHT venue in Koto Ward. One of the most anticipated features of this year's exhibition is the opportunity for visitors to explore future mobility services on-site. Attendees will also be able to use VR devices to experience the “Connected Car†concept—an innovative vision of vehicles that offer internet-based services and seamless connectivity.
In 1991, the Tokyo Motor Show reached its peak with over 2 million visitors. However, the last edition in 2015 saw attendance drop to around 800,000. International participation has also decreased significantly. While 26 brands from 14 foreign companies participated in 2015, this year’s show will feature only 19 brands from 13 overseas firms. Notably, major players like Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and three large U.S. automakers will not be present. Meanwhile, IT companies are increasingly shaping the future of autonomous driving, making self-driving technology a key area of competition. Yet, some major tech firms are also skipping the event.
Toshio Nishikawa, president of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, emphasized that the focus is no longer on sheer size but on improving the overall quality and appeal of the exhibition. "We’re not chasing big numbers, but we want to strengthen our presence through meaningful content and innovation," he said.
