In January last year, game engine developer Crytek announced the launch of the "VR First" program, which aims to provide VR research support to students from major universities around the world and establish a VR academic laboratory.
Recently, it was reported that VR First was formally independent in order to get rid of the commercial interest relationship with Crytek. A representative familiar with the matter said that VR First formally gained independence early this year with the support of several potential partners.
Crytek is known for its eponymous game engine and the Crysis game series. The industry once used the game screen developed by the Crytek engine as the top standard. However, in the past year, Crytek was deeply involved in the financial crisis. It failed to pay employees for six months, and closed five studios in Shanghai, South Korea, Bulgaria, Hungary and Turkey.
On the other hand, VR First will expand significantly in the coming year and plans to create 50 VR/AR education labs by the end of 2017. Currently, VR First has opened 26 laboratories worldwide and has 581 cooperative agencies.
VR First also collaborated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and companies in the VR industry to establish standards for the creation and consumption of AR, VR, and MR content.
Although VR First was previously affiliated with Crytek, VR First did not see the enthusiasm of lab developers for the CryEngine engine. According to relevant data, Unity is the engine of choice for 48% of developers, Unreal engine selection is 20%, and only 14% of CryEngine engines are selected.
