ARM hosted the 2014 Technology Forum in Beijing on Wednesday. Sina Mobile had the chance to interview Dr. John Heinlein, MD, Vice President of Global Marketing, and Michael Horne, Head of Internet of Things, discussing topics like the Internet of Things, the Cortex-M series architecture, and mbed OS.
The company is trying to bring the hardware model into the software world. While many mobile phone users might not be familiar with ARM, tech enthusiasts definitely are. ARM’s business model isn't about selling chips directly, but rather licensing its technology to semiconductor and software vendors. Its low cost, high performance, and low power consumption make the ARM architecture ideal for mobile devices.
Take the MediaTek MT6595, a popular eight-core processor, as an example. It features four Cortex-A7 cores and four Cortex-A17 cores. The A8 chip in the iPhone 6 is also based on the ARM V8 architecture, and the Krait 400 CPU in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 is built on a modified version of the ARM architecture.
In short, ARM dominates the mobile processor architecture licensing market, avoiding direct competition between chip manufacturers by focusing on innovation and efficiency.
At the end of September and early October, ARM launched the Cortex-M7 processor design and the free mbed OS operating system, aiming to replicate the success seen in mobile processors within the IoT market.
mbed OS is a free OS tailored for Cortex-M-based hardware, offering security, communication protocols, and device management features. According to Dr. John Heinlein, small and medium-sized enterprises can register on the mbed OS website, access the OS for free, and benefit from support from over 100 OEMs, foundries, and major chip companies. ARM will also provide marketing collaboration.
“This is a huge opportunity for SMEs,†he emphasized. ARM has done a lot of foundational work, allowing companies to focus on product innovation and differentiation while reducing development costs and time-to-market.
The concept behind mbed OS mirrors the success of ARM’s chip licensing model, supported by a complete ecosystem and strong industry partnerships. ARM is confident in its ability to promote mbed OS effectively.
So why is ARM leading the Internet of Things? Even though there are many competitors—like Qualcomm and China Telecom, who have been pushing smart city initiatives—ARM has a unique edge.
When asked why ARM is the right choice, Dr. Heinlein was quick to respond. “There are two main reasons.†First, ARM can offer a platform that spans multiple standards, thanks to its long history of collaboration and a strong partner ecosystem. Second, ARM has established partnerships with key communication platforms. Over the past 13 years, ARM acquired Sensinode Oy, which played a major role in developing the 6LoWPAN standard for low-cost, low-power devices.
For Dr. Heinlein, the question of “why ARM†is something he's very passionate about. When answering other questions, he often returned to this point. “Based on the success of ARM in the A series (mobile chip design), plus compatibility and inertia, that’s the third advantage.â€
“And the fourth reason is simple: security,†he added.
