The MPV market in China has long been dominated by popular international brands. Models like the GL8, Odyssey, and Dejie from various joint ventures consistently perform well in sales and generate impressive profits compared to similar vehicles or SUVs from these brands. Interestingly, South Korea also offers MPVs, some of which are imported. One such example is the Kia Jiale showcased in the images below. Despite its attractive features, it hasn't garnered significant attention in the Chinese market, making it a rare sight on the roads.
Let’s take a closer look at this vehicle. It's a seven-seater MPV with five trim levels available. Measuring 4525mm in length, 1805mm in width, 1605mm in height, and boasting a wheelbase of 2750mm, it might not seem particularly large, but its design is bold and commanding. The interior space is surprisingly generous, surpassing expectations given its size. The cabin features a 2+2+3 seating arrangement, giving it a modern and stylish aesthetic.
The rear lights are equipped with LED technology, ensuring excellent visibility at night, although the front headlights are not LED. Under the hood, the Kia Jiale is powered by a standard 2.0-liter engine producing 152 horsepower. While this engine is sufficient for the class, it may not stand out against competitors. All models come with an automatic transmission, and the starting price is listed at 160,800 RMB, though discounts bring it down to around 140,000 RMB. Given that it’s an imported MPV, this pricing offers decent value for money.
As seen in the interior photos, the design leans toward simplicity, neither fully embracing the family car vibe nor the typical MPV aesthetic. While automatic transmission is standard, a central control screen is notably absent, which is a missed opportunity. Additionally, a panoramic sunroof is not included as standard equipment. If these features were added, it could significantly boost the car’s appeal.
In terms of practicality, the third-row seating in the Kia Jiale is decent, though the design of the side seats makes the center position rather cramped. This layout prioritizes comfort for most passengers while sacrificing the usability of the center seat, which is often rarely occupied anyway. Overall, the car’s price remains relatively high, and its lack of sales can likely be attributed to its brand reputation.

Despite its intriguing specifications and competitive pricing, the Kia Jiale seems to struggle to find its niche in the crowded Chinese MPV market. Perhaps a more aggressive marketing strategy or additional feature upgrades could help improve its standing.
