Q2 Global AR/VR Headset Shipment Volume Rises by 25.5%

IDC recently released its "Worldwide Quarterly Augmented and Virtual Reality Headset Tracker" report, revealing that global shipments in the first quarter reached 2.13 million units, marking a 25.5% year-over-year increase. It's worth noting that this data excludes mobile VR headsets like Google Cardboard. According to IDC’s findings, the top five companies for AR/VR headset shipments in Q2 2017 were Samsung, Sony, Facebook, TCL, and HTC, with market shares of 26.7%, 24.4%, 11.6%, 5.0%, and 4.4%, respectively. Samsung saw strong sales of its Gear VR due to the success of the Galaxy S8 and S8+; Sony's PSVR ranked second, while Facebook's Oculus Rift benefited from a $100 price cut, pushing it into third place. TCL secured fourth position through bundled sales with smartphones, and HTC Vive came in fifth, with a 4.4% market share. Notably, HTC had announced a price drop of 1,400 yuan just before the report, bringing the Vive down to 5,488 yuan to boost future sales. $1.1 Billion! HTC and Google Reach Acquisition Agreement HTC experienced a significant drop in August revenue, falling 54.39% year-on-year and 51.56% quarter-on-quarter to NT$30.01 billion—the lowest since September 2004. Over the first eight months of the year, sales dropped 14% to NT$39.8 billion. The company has reported losses for nine consecutive quarters. Over the past five years, HTC’s market value has fallen by nearly 75%, now standing at just $1.9 billion. Its smartphone business holds less than 2% of the global market and has slipped out of the top 10. On September 21, HTC and Google announced an agreement where Google would hire some HTC engineers who worked on the Pixel phones, and in return, HTC would receive a $1.1 billion transaction fee. Additionally, HTC granted Google non-exclusive rights to its intellectual property.
HTC and Google Reached an Acquisition Agreement HTC plans to focus more on its own smartphones and the HTC Vive. While the Vive has been one of HTC’s most successful ventures in recent years, the VR industry is still in its early stages, and HTC will need to continue innovating independently.

Small School 8K VR Head Finishes Kickstarter Crowdfunding

Recently, the Small School 8K VR Head launched on Kickstarter, aiming to raise $200,000. Surprisingly, it met its goal within just one hour.
Small School Technology 8K VR Head First revealed in January, the 8K VR Head features two 4K screens (3840 x 2160), a 200° field of view, less than 15ms latency, and DP1.4 and USB 3.0 interfaces. The device is expected to ship in January 2018.

Intel Cancels Project Alloy

Last year, Microsoft introduced the Windows MR platform, and within a year, five major OEMs launched their own Windows MR headsets. However, Intel's Project Alloy, launched around the same time, did not go as smoothly. According to reports, Intel recently canceled the public reference design for the Project Alloy VR headset, citing a lack of partner interest—possibly shifting focus to Microsoft.

iPhone AR Applications Are Still Popular Among Early Adopters!

The iPhone 8 has officially launched, but consumer response has been lukewarm, with some even calling it "disappointing." Many are still waiting for the iPhone X. In addition to that, Apple’s A11 chip in the new iPhones continues to impress, and although it didn’t explicitly mention VR, support for AR was clearly emphasized.
AR Apps in iOS 11 After updating to iOS 11, the App Store added an AR category, featuring apps like AR cameras and games. However, I want to remind users: AR apps require high-performance devices. On older models like the iPhone 6/6s/7, some apps caused overheating or lag. If you're using an older model, be cautious about upgrading! Var v_productid="1021231";
