This year, Baidu has placed a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. According to recent reports, the company launched the "Baidu AI Accelerator" as a free initiative, aiming to help developers explore practical applications of AI technology. The accelerator is designed as an incubation platform, offering technological support and resource allocation to foster innovation and build a robust AI ecosystem.
At the end of the year, Baidu is pushing forward with its AI strategy, striving to reignite momentum in the field. Recently, the company held an AI Developer Combat Camp in Beijing, marking the fifth event of the year following stops in Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. During this event, Baidu officially announced the launch of the AI Accelerator, which is expected to serve as a key player in nurturing startups and driving AI adoption across various industries.
In the first phase of the program, 22 startup teams were selected, covering sectors such as smart home, agriculture, healthcare, justice, customer service, AI chips, and automotive services. These teams are working on cutting-edge AI solutions that align with Baidu's vision for the future.
To attract developers, Baidu has made several strategic moves over the past year. Its core strength lies in advanced AI technologies, including speech recognition, image processing, facial recognition, UNIT, AR, and PaddlePaddle. Earlier this year, the company introduced new initiatives like the "Robot Vision Solution," "Face Hardware Partner Program," and a new billing model for face recognition interfaces. Additionally, Baidu made a bold move by announcing that all voice technology interfaces would be permanently free.
This open approach has been widely recognized. Currently, Baidu has opened more than 80 AI-related tools and capabilities for developers. For example, its voice technology can support up to 50,000 daily voice recognition requests, 200,000 voice synthesis calls, and three custom wake-up words per day. These numbers highlight the scale and flexibility of Baidu’s AI offerings.
The goal behind this open strategy is to encourage developers to experiment and find real-world applications for AI. Some of these technologies are already integrated into Baidu Cloud products, enabling the cloud division to capitalize on AI advancements and attract more users.
According to an insider at Baidu, the decision to offer free access is driven by the belief that "there is no immediate plan to monetize it." Instead, the focus is on ensuring that the developed technologies are actually used and adopted.
Since adopting the "All in AI" strategy, Lu Qi has emphasized building an ecosystem through open collaboration. This philosophy was first demonstrated with the Apollo autonomous driving project, where Baidu made its platform open-source. This move reflects a broader shift in Baidu's approach to AI development.
Compared to companies like Alibaba and Tencent, which have successfully integrated AI into e-commerce and social platforms, Baidu—primarily reliant on search and advertising—faces greater pressure to demonstrate tangible AI applications to investors. It needs to prove that its AI technologies can be effectively utilized and scaled.
However, Baidu is not alone in this race. Institutions like the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are also making significant strides in AI, particularly in voice technology. In October, HKUST announced a 1.024 billion yuan fund to support developers with promising AI projects. Meanwhile, Keda Xunfei has established multiple AI-focused groups, offering comprehensive support from technology to capital and resources.
Despite its strengths, Baidu still faces challenges, especially in hardware. Although Baidu has started its Intelligent Hardware Division after acquiring Raven, it is still in the early stages. Recently, Baidu partnered with Xiaomi to bring its AI technology into Xiaomi’s smart devices. Whether Baidu can leverage its growing ecosystem to compensate for its hardware limitations will be critical in the coming years.
