What is Lonworks?
Lonworks, short for Local Operating Network, is an open and fully distributed monitoring system designed as a network platform. It stands out for its unique capabilities and has become one of the most powerful and efficient fieldbus technologies in the market. Its technology is widely recognized and integrated into various national standards in China. By using advanced neuron chips—large-scale integrated circuits that combine control and communication functions—Lonworks creates intelligent monitoring nodes. These nodes connect through network transceivers and communication media to form a fully distributed local operating network, known as the LON network.
Lonworks is essentially a measurement and control network technology, specifically tailored for industrial automation. It's often referred to as fieldbus technology and allows easy integration of sensors, actuators, meters, and other field devices. Unlike traditional local area networks (LANs), Lonworks is an industrial control network optimized for transmitting small data packets such as monitoring, status, and control information.
The core of Lonworks lies in its Neuron chip, a 3-bit 8-bit CPU that combines both communication and control functions. This chip supports the Lontalk protocol and 34 common I/O objects. It uses a complete seven-layer communication protocol based on the OSI model and follows an object-oriented design approach. In Lonworks, this is called "network variables," which simplifies the process of network communication by turning it into a parameter-setting task. This not only reduces development time but also enhances the reliability of the network.
The maximum communication speed of Lonworks is 1.25 Mbit/s over a distance of up to 130 meters, while at a lower speed of 78 kbit/s, it can reach up to 2,700 meters using twisted pair cables. The network can support up to 3,200 nodes.
Lonworks supports multiple transmission media, including twisted pair, coaxial cable, fiber optics, radio frequency, infrared, and even power lines. Each medium requires specific transceivers and routers to ensure seamless communication.
