According to reports from international media, Microsoft had long shown interest in the smartwatch space. In 2013, the company even came up with the idea of launching an Xbox-branded smartwatch. However, after testing some prototype devices, they ultimately decided to abandon the project. This move was part of a broader trend where Microsoft scaled back on various experimental products.
Recently, leaked images of the prototype Xbox smartwatch have surfaced online. The photos reveal a design that closely resembles the original Apple Watch, which was actually released two years earlier. While the resemblance is striking, it's clear that Microsoft was aiming to enter the wearable market with its own unique offering.
According to insiders, the prototype featured a Surface-style magnetic charging interface, a 1.5-inch display, and 6GB of storage. It also included a replaceable strap, suggesting a modular approach to the design. What’s interesting is that sources claim Microsoft had planned to launch this smartwatch as early as 2015. However, for reasons not fully disclosed, the project was eventually canceled.
