At the PCIM Asia 2013 exhibition in Shanghai, Infineon Technologies AG introduced the 650V TRENCHSTOP® 5, a next-generation thin-wafer IGBT that quickly captured market attention after its launch in late 2012. This innovative technology has received over 400 samples to customers, with mass production starting in May 2013. Many of them are now preparing for trial production.
The TRENCHSTOP® 5 marks a significant improvement in IGBT performance, offering much higher system efficiency compared to current mainstream IGBTs on the market. It provides nearly a 1% increase in system efficiency over competing IGBTs. In addition to improved efficiency, the device also features higher breakdown voltages, enhancing reliability and giving customers a competitive edge through product differentiation.
High efficiency and power density make TRENCHSTOP® 5 the preferred choice for Boost circuits operating in switching frequency ranges from 16 kHz to 30 kHz in photovoltaic inverters, and from 20 kHz to 70 kHz in UPS PFC and battery charging circuits. The increased efficiency leads to lower junction temperatures, longer lifespan, and greater reliability. It also allows for more compact designs, such as using TO-220 instead of TO-247 packages.
This IGBT was also used for the first time in noise-sensitive applications like audio amplifiers. Thanks to its high durability and soft switching characteristics, TRENCHSTOP® 5 ensures a stable bus voltage across a wide input voltage range, delivering optimal audio quality and reduced system weight.
TRENCHSTOP® 5 delivers exceptional efficiency. Compared to Infineon's HighSpeed (H3) series, it reduces turn-off loss by 60%. Its saturation voltage drop has a positive temperature coefficient, which helps reduce losses during operation. The gate charge is 2.5 times smaller than H3, making it easier to drive and allowing for smaller, cost-effective drivers. Additionally, it uses a fast diode with a forward voltage drop less affected by temperature and a reverse recovery time under 50ns. The low output capacitance improves light load efficiency, making it ideal for applications where operation is typically below 40% of maximum power.
