In the past, a tragic train accident on July 23rd left a deep scar on society. Investigations revealed that a lightning strike caused malfunctions in the train control system and track circuits, leading to incorrect signals and unsafe operations. Had reliable surge protection devices been installed at the time, this tragedy might have been avoided. However, such technology wasn’t available then.
Natural disasters should never be an excuse for complacency. Lightning strikes shouldn't continue to cause harm. "With the right technical solutions, even during intense lightning storms or high surge currents over the past century, trains could operate safely without power failures or dangerous conditions," said Zhang Yonglong, product manager at Littelfuse China’s core agent.
Littelfuse is a global leader in surge protection technology. Their AK series of high-power transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes are designed to protect critical equipment in telecommunications, rail systems, defense, avionics, and power grids. Compared to traditional solutions, they offer longer lifespan, lower clamping voltage, and a more compact design.
"Littelfuse has a long history of producing TVS diodes, and we are currently among the top two manufacturers worldwide. High-power TVS diodes are one of our core products, used to protect semiconductor components from voltage surges. Their PN junctions are larger than those of standard diodes, allowing them to handle large currents and prevent damage," explained Zhang.
The AK series offers a full range of high-power TVS diode products, including AK1, AK3, AK6, AK10, and AK15 models. These can be customized based on specific customer needs. The AK series is known for its ability to withstand up to 15kA surges (8/20μs), making it ideal for applications requiring robust protection.
One of the key advantages of the AK series is its Foldbak patented technology, which reduces clamping voltage below the avalanche level for enhanced protection. This ensures that even under extreme conditions, the voltage remains within safe limits.
"Previously, base stations relied on large SPD modules for surge protection. Now, a single AK3 device can replace multiple discrete components, saving space and simplifying design. This is especially important as base stations become smaller and more compact, often placed indoors or on towers," Zhang added.
As shown in Figure 3, a thumb-sized AK-series TVS diode can replace an SPD module the size of a book, significantly reducing space requirements while improving system performance. Unlike traditional modules that may need replacement every year, TVS diodes are durable and can last decades, making them a cost-effective solution.
The AK series is widely used in telecommunications, including base stations, servers, blade servers, cloud storage, and data centers. Littelfuse continues to lead the industry with innovative solutions that ensure reliability and safety in critical infrastructure.
