In the past, the "7·23" train accident left a deep scar on people's hearts. The investigation revealed that lightning struck the train control center and track circuit, causing malfunctions and leading to unsafe driving conditions. Had reliable lightning protection equipment been installed on the train at that time, this tragedy might have been avoided. However, such technology was not available then.
Natural disasters should never be an excuse for complacency. Lightning should no longer be the cause of accidents. As Zhang Yonglong, product manager of Littelfuse China's core agent, stated, “With advanced technical solutions, even during severe lightning storms or surge currents over the past century, trains could operate safely without power failures or dangerous situations.â€
Littelfuse’s AK series devices are designed to withstand high-energy surges up to 15kA (8/20μs), offering critical protection for power supply systems. These devices are widely used in telecommunications infrastructure, industrial systems, railway signal control rooms, defense, avionics, and grid systems.
As a leader in surge protection technology, Littelfuse has a long history of producing TVS diodes, which are among the most essential products of the company. High-power TVS diodes, like those in the AK family, protect semiconductor components from voltage transients. Their larger PN junction allows them to handle large currents, preventing damage by grounding them effectively.
The AK series is known for its wide range of applications, from low to high power, with some models capable of handling up to 30kW—rarely matched by other companies. It includes the AK1, AK3, AK6, AK10, and AK15 series, all customizable to meet specific customer needs.
These devices are RoHS compliant, UL listed, and lead-free, offering features such as:
- Up to 15kA surge performance (8/20μs waveform)
- Low clamping voltage
- Fast response time (<1μs)
- Precise breakdown voltage (±5% of VBR)
- Foldbak patented technology for superior clamping characteristics
Foldbak technology ensures that the clamping voltage remains below the avalanche value, providing enhanced protection. As shown in Figure 2, the diode first enters avalanche breakdown, then Zener breakdown, stabilizing the voltage within a safe range.
One AK series TVS diode can replace multiple discrete diodes in parallel, saving board space, simplifying design, and reducing component count. It is available in both single via and SMD packages, suitable for various applications.
The AK series is widely used in base stations, including Huawei's systems, where it replaces traditional SPD modules. Its compact size makes it ideal for modern, space-constrained environments. As seen in Figure 3, a thumb-sized AK device can replace a large SPD module, improving system performance while saving space.
In addition to base stations, the AK series is also used in servers, blade servers, cloud storage, and data centers. Littelfuse was the first to introduce TVS diodes in base stations, and the AK series remains a top choice for communication systems worldwide.
With its reliability, efficiency, and advanced technology, Littelfuse continues to set the standard in surge protection, ensuring safer and more stable operations across industries.
