Second-generation Lighthouse and VR controllers will be introduced in the second half of the year! From Baidu VR

Today, Gabe Newell, CEO of American video game developer Valve, conducted an AMA user interactive Q&A activity on the US news social website Reddit. In response to questions from VR_is_Forever, Valve staff Joe Ludwig (Joe Ludwig) responded instead of Gabe Newell and revealed that it will launch the second-generation Lighthouse tracking system in the second half of this year, and stated that there are other manufacturers working on the SteamVR head based on Lighthosue. Obviously.

User VR_is_Forever asked the following questions:

In addition to HTC, will there be more hardware manufacturers interested in launching their own Lighthouse/Steam VR headline? What do you think are the reasons why other companies have not yet entered (at least if they are publicly available)?

Palmer Rachie said that supporting Vive "needs" cooperation in different stores, but is this true? This may be HTC's thing, but I'm curious whether you have participated. Can't they just write their own software for Vive? Why does Oculus need HTC/Valve help?

What were some of the problems that occurred when implementing the near-automatic production of Steam controllers? Valve has not produced anything directly since then. Is Valve still interested in producing its own hardware?

Answers from Valve staff Joe Ludwig are as follows:

There are already 500 companies registered to use Lighthouse, and some companies are manufacturing heads-up displays. Although few companies are talking about this matter, some manufacturers will announce when they will be ready.

As far as we know, everything is done step by step to ensure that all stores support Vive. As part of the initial setup, you will still install Steam to get drivers, but Vive does not need to be able to run Steam.

The controller's production line is still strong and the controller is constantly evolving. The next production line we are building is the base station we discussed at Dev Days. They will appear in the second half of this year.

Automation allows us to maintain local production, which means that our employees can personally control the manufacturing process. This is a great help to Valve's operations, so we may continue to do so.

In August 2016, Valve started to open up a peripheral technology solution based on Lighthouse Technology. According to Joe Ludwig's answer, 500 companies have registered to use Lighthouse technology, and some of the teams are still making VR headsets. Xiao Bian is not sure whether these companies' VR heads have reached similar depth cooperation with Valve as HTC, and Joe Ludwig did not disclose more information.

In addition, in October 2016 Steam Dev Days, Valve also showed the latest VR controllers and discussed the optimization design of the new generation of Lighthouse base stations. According to Joe Ludwig, Valve will be showcasing its new VR motion controller and Lighthouse base station system in the second half of this year.

Valve's new controller is similar to the Oculus Touch controller. The new version of the VR motion controller has a smaller prototype and is lighter to grasp. Pass through the controller by hand, and there is also a strap tied to the wrist. The new version of the controller also supports natural gripping and gripping.

Current Lighthouse base stations emit laser line scan tracking space (one line scans along the x-axis and another line scans along the y-axis) through the Motor to achieve independent tracking in each direction. The motor also needs to be equipped with laser diodes, optical components, motor controllers, and wheel assemblies. Valve, on the other hand, says that X-axis and Y-axis information can be obtained from a single rotating motor. This means that one of the motors, and all the components it depends on, can be removed from the base station.

Cutting off half of the parts is a cost-saving move, and the price of the next-generation HTC Vive may drop. Let us look forward to it together.
