South Korean operator SK Telecom announced today that it will work with Ericsson and Qualcomm to conduct interoperability testing and aerial field trials under the 5G New Radio (5G), in an attempt to accelerate the commercialization of 5G NR technology and the formation of a mobile 5G ecosystem. In the trial, the three communications giants will showcase the new 5G NR technology, using high-frequency bandwidth to increase network capacity and achieve multi-gigabit data transmission per second. The trial will use 3GPP 5G NR Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology with adaptive beamforming and beam tracking techniques to provide robust and sustained mobile broadband communications in high frequency bands, including non-line of sight (NLOS) environments. It can also take advantage of a new frame design based on OFDM-based waveforms and the 5G NR specification, which will help to further clarify the specific challenges of applying 5G NR technology to mobile networks and devices.

The trial will be implemented in South Korea in the second half of next year.
