Today, smart devices are closely tied to the internet. When we think of the internet, the three major telecom operators often come to mind. We love them for the convenience they bring, but we also hate them for the high costs and hidden traps they sometimes create. Imagine a world where your phone could call, chat, or video without needing the internet at all!
Recently, a Canadian team introduced a small device called Sonnet, which allows smartphones to connect and form a local network without relying on the internet. It enables voice calls, text messaging, sending photos, and data sharing between users.
Sonnet uses radio technology to create a private local area network (LAN), allowing communication between users who own the same device or even with more people in the same network. The effective transmission range is up to 5 kilometers, and if the terrain is open, it can reach as far as 15 kilometers. With more users, the network expands—up to 80 kilometers in total.
To ensure security, messages between your phone and the device are protected by WPA/WPA2 encryption, while communication between Sonnet units uses AES-256 encryption. This makes it safe and reliable for use.
Additionally, Sonnet features an offline map function, so you can download maps in advance and navigate without an internet connection. In emergencies, you can send SOS alerts through the app by pressing and holding the SOS button. The device has a 4,000mAh battery that lasts up to 24 hours.
Its hexagonal design is durable, dustproof, and waterproof to IP66, making it ideal for outdoor adventures, group travel, or areas with no network coverage. However, it doesn’t have GPS functionality.
Currently, Sonnet is available on crowdfunding platforms, with a price of $89 (about 605 CNY) for a pair. Since one unit isn’t enough, you’ll need two to use it effectively.
