Imagine how convenient it would be if a phone could call, chat, or video without relying on the Internet at all! That’s where Sonnet comes in. A Canadian team has developed a small device called Sonnet, which creates a local network among smartphones, allowing voice calls, text messages, picture sharing, and data transfers — all without needing an Internet connection.
Sonnet uses radio technology to build a dedicated local area network (LAN), enabling communication between users who own the device. It can send messages to other users or even support group chats. The effective transmission range is up to 5 kilometers, and with open terrain, it can reach as far as 15 kilometers. If enough people use Sonnet, the network can extend up to 80 kilometers, making it 16 times more extensive than normal.
Security is also a key feature. All communications between your phone and the Sonnet device are protected by WPA/WPA2 encryption, while data transferred between Sonnets uses AES-256 encryption. This ensures your conversations remain private and secure.
Additionally, Sonnet includes an offline map function, so you can download maps in advance and still navigate without a network. It's perfect for outdoor adventures, camping trips, or areas with poor connectivity. In emergencies, you can send an SOS message to nearby Sonnet users by pressing and holding the SOS button on the app.
The device has a 4,000mAh battery that lasts up to 24 hours on a full charge. Its hexagonal design makes it durable, dustproof, and waterproof to IP66 standards. However, it doesn’t include GPS functionality.
Currently, Sonnet is available through crowdfunding, priced at $89 (about 605 RMB) per pair. Since one device isn't useful alone, you need at least two to make it work.
