Allegro MicroSystems, LLC has released a new Power Management IC (PMIC) A4413 that can be configured as a buck or buck-boost pre-regulator that efficiently converts automotive battery voltage to a tightly regulated intermediate voltage with Complete control, diagnostics and protection features. Its output includes a 5V, maximum 75mA high voltage protection linear regulator (LDO) for remote sensors (V5P) and an adjustable synchronous buck regulator (ADJ) from 0.8 to 3.3V with a maximum of 800mA. The A4413 device is specifically designed to power microprocessors in high temperature environments, making it ideal for under hood and other automotive applications.
The A4413 can be turned on via a logic level (ENB) or high voltage (ENBAT) input. The diagnostic output includes a power-on reset output (NPOR) with a 2ms rise delay to monitor the synchronous buck, and a PowerOK output to monitor the 5V LDO ( POK5V), and an ENBAT status output (ENBATS). The A4413's dual bandgap (one for regulation and one for fault detection) increases long-term reliability.
The A4413 device includes a Pulse Width Window Watchdog (PWWD) timer that can be programmed to detect a pulse width of 1 to 2ms (WDADJ). This watchdog timer has an activation delay that can be adjusted to match the processor's start-up based on the pulse width setting. By using the WDTOL pin, the watchdog window tolerance can be set to ±8%, ±13%, or ±18%. The watchdog timer also has an active low enable pin (WDENn) for initial factory programming or field flash programming.
The protection features of the A4413 device include undervoltage and overvoltage lockout for the two output rails. The V5P LDO provides foldback overcurrent protecTIon when the output is shorted. In addition, the V5P output can be protected from short-circuit to battery events. The two switching regulators also include pulse-by-pulse current limiting, hiccup mode short-circuit protection, LX short-circuit protection, asynchronous diode missing protection (VREG only), and thermal shutdown (TSD) protection. .
