What is Google Daydream VR?

In the field of virtual reality, Google's original Cardboard has been very active with low prices and an entry-level experience, and even has access to YouTube videos from this "cardboard device."

However, in 2016, Google has a bigger plan in the field of virtual reality, whether it is virtual reality or entertainment, and hope to go further. At this year's I/O conference, Google introduced its Daydream platform for the first time, a platform that integrates Android devices with a new generation of virtual reality headsets and provides a deeper experience than Cardboard.

So if you are also an Android user and interested in mobile virtual reality technology, you may want to thoroughly understand Google's Daydream.

What is Daydream?

What is Daydream?

Daydream further enhances the experience of mobile devices in presenting virtual reality content. The main changes come from three aspects. The first is the hardware configuration requirements for smartphones. Google has released a list of configurations for the best VR experience. All vendors' smartphones must meet the minimum configuration requirements for this list.

In addition to Google's own Daydream View headset, smartphone makers can also develop and design their own headsets as long as they meet Google's standards.

There is also an integrated VR content center. The virtual reality store called Daydream Home allows us to browse all the content directly, including games, apps and videos.

Why do we need Daydream?

At present, although virtual reality technology is very popular, the content platform can only be described as "split". We can get all kinds of virtual reality content, but we lack an integration. If you are a Samsung Gear VR user, you must know what I am talking about. That's right, if you want to watch YouTube's virtual reality video, how complicated the previous operation is, you must have a deep understanding.

Daydream was born to solve this problem, at least in the Android ecosystem. It integrates all content, including developers, apps, games and videos, into a unified platform that can be viewed through a Hub, regardless of size or content.

In addition, although the previous Google Cardboard is very interesting and cheap, it basically has no technical content and is not comfortable to wear. Daydream is a new product with more technology and comfort.

Which devices support Daydream

To be compatible with Google's Daydream platform, you must first meet Google's Daydream-Ready standard.

However, there are not many devices that officially release the Daydream-Ready standard. Only Google's own Pixel and Pixel XL are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processors, and this is the only chip certified by Daydream.

Other vendors are developing devices that are compatible with the Daydream-Ready standard, including Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Asus, and Alcatel. However, these vendors have not officially announced their devices that meet Daydream requirements.

In addition, Daydream View also has a dedicated Daydream controller, which is also designed by Google, allowing users to interact with devices and content without the need for a VR helmet or smartphone. This is not the case with the current Samsung Gear VR. The device is also the biggest difference.

Many third-party apps will support the Daydream platform in the future, but they have not yet been officially announced. However, Google has confirmed that YouTube, Google Play Movies and Google Photos will all support the Daydream platform.

In addition, including Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu are also on the list of support, of course, there will be a large number of games landing on the Daydream platform in the future.
