Fairchild (NASDAQ: FCS), a global leader in high-performance power semiconductor solutions, has expanded its portfolio with a new line of extended temperature (ET) medium voltage MOSFETs that operate reliably at 175°C. These advanced components offer a significant improvement in power density—up to 85% higher—and are three times more reliable than standard 150°C-rated MOSFETs, making them ideal for high-demand applications.
The new ET MOSFET family meets the IPC-9592 power conversion standard, allowing a maximum junction temperature of up to 150°C—exceeding the capabilities of conventional 150°C devices. This enhanced performance provides greater design flexibility and margin, reducing the need for additional cooling solutions like heat sinks, which can add cost and complexity to designs.
Available in a range of package options—including 5mm x 6mm, 3mm x 3mm, and a new TO-Leadless (TO-LL) package—the product line offers voltage ratings from 30V to 150V. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide array of applications, such as DC-DC and AC-DC power supplies, motor drives, avionics, miniature solar inverters, power tools, and telecommunications systems.
Suman Narayan, Vice President of Fairchild’s iFET product line, stated, “As the latest addition to our ET MOSFET family, these devices give designers more design headroom when developing products that must perform under extreme temperatures. They eliminate the need for costly cooling methods while delivering superior performance compared to competitive offerings.â€
Operating at 175°C makes these MOSFETs particularly well-suited for high-temperature environments, including solar power systems and Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. Their enhanced reliability is especially beneficial for use in harsh conditions, such as aviation, rail transport, and industrial power tools.
The compact packaging and extended temperature range also allow manufacturers to reduce product size without sacrificing performance, or even increase output capacity within the same footprint. This makes the series an attractive option for engineers seeking to optimize both efficiency and space.
Fairchild will showcase its ET MOSFETs at the 2015 APEC exhibition from March 16 to 19 in Charlotte, North Carolina, at booth #905. Technical experts will be on hand to discuss the benefits of extended temperature MOSFETs and other energy-efficient solutions.
